Happy Birthday, Faynia!
I know you're not on LJ much (neither am I), but I saw a reminder of your birthday. I went back to see which of your stories I'd enjoyed so much in the past, and immediately became engrossed in your A Summer Inheritance again! I'm up to chapter 4, and had to put it aside to start my day, but will pick it up again this evening.

I read some of your back entries, and hope that you're well. Are you still teaching? I taught in the grades for many years (teaching in a university now) and found working with young ones incredibly rewarding. At any rate, I just wanted to let you know that you've provided me (and apparently, still are...) with many joyful hours and I wish you the best on your natal day!

Spiritual lessons from HP
A great article about a thought-provoking project:

https://fanslashfic.com/2017/01/11/harry-potter-and-the-sacred-text/

I really loved the last paragraph:

One of my favourite things about the Harry Potter series is how deeply it deals with the big questions of human experience. Does love really triumph over hate in the end? Is there such thing as a selfless act? Is it ethical to act for the Greater Good? Harry Potter and the Sacred Text explores these questions and helps us re-read our favourite books in a completely new way. And, for that, I give them my blessing.

Happy (Extremely) Belated Birthday, HpStrangelove!!!
Bristol Boys

Author’s Note: Back in 2011, hpstrangelove and I combined a trip to the Diacon Alley Harry Potter convention with a trip around England. One night in Bristol, we glanced up at an open window in the building across from our restaurant and started this story over a few beers. It has been languishing on my hard drive since then. Happy Belated Birthday, hpstrangelove, my friend!

A/N 2: Some of the sexual situations owe their presence here to some fondly remembered 'favorite parts' of Larry Townsend's M/M bdsm books. I no longer have those treasured paperbacks, but some of my favorite dialogue has made it into this story!

On to the story!!!!Collapse )

Dear Yuletide Author
Dear Yuletide Author

Thanks so much, dearest Yuletide Writer, for agreeing to gift me with your time and talent through a story! I know going in that I will seriously LOVE anything you write.

I am so intrigued by the characters that I’ve listed, and anything that you do with them will be satisfying, I am certain. If you are just not feeling my optional prompts—remember, they’re optional. That’s what this fest is all about. In the same vein, if instead of the adventure/mystery/crime/business plots, you want to write a character study or a quiet interior piece, please feel free. It will take me totally by surprise and give me more depth and insight into my darling fandoms, and I’m sure that your creativity + our fandom = sheer, unmitigated glory!.

I’d like to start by saying that I adore slash, though it isn’t necessary for the fic: you can go for the male bonding or buddy fic or bromance. I am most interested in the dynamics of relationship, how a character negotiates difference between himself and his companion/lover/friend, and how he calls upon his relationships to help them interact with their world. I would request, however, that you do not write these characters in het relationships. I also begin to retch at fluff or crack happening between my ‘manly’ characters. Non-con, watersports, necrophilia, scat are major squicks for me, though feel free to bring on the BDSM or hot, angry sex, if you are so inclined!

Next, I would really prefer it if you could avoid character bashing, particularly the female characters in these fandoms. Just because the guys are more into each other than the women doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with them, so if you could keep it from being the female character’s ‘fault’ that the men prefer each other, I will love you forever. The women don’t have to be ‘good,’ in fact, I adore the scenes in which Fiona’s beliefs war with what she is growing to learn about the world, and she makes big mistakes. It’s just that I don't like to see characters given negative qualities that aren't in their canon, or put in positions that draw really negative interpretations of their actions because the author disliked them for some reason. If you write them as human, I will be happy, and if you really dislike a character, I'd rather you just quietly exclude them from the story.

Finally, thank you so much for doing this. I am so excited to see what you choose to do with my little obsessions. I also allowed anonymous comments for this post in case you have further questions (or just want to squee with a fellow fan!).

Just for your convenience, I have my requests copied under the cut so that all my comments are in one place.

First, thanks so much, dearest Yuletide Writer, for agreeing to gift me with your time and talent through a story! I know going in that I will seriously LOVE anything you write. Anything written in one of the small fandoms that I love just enriches the earth!

Second, I apologize if my prompts seem to box you in. Just take it and run with it, I’m sure that your creativity + our fandom = sheer, unqualified fabulousness!

Third, I adore the characters that I’ve listed, and anything that you do with them will be satisfying, I am certain. If you are just not feeling my optional prompts—remember, they’re optional. If you have a wildly different impulse—go for it! That’s what this fest is all about. In the same vein, if instead of the crime or adventure plots, you want to write a character study or a quiet interior piece, please feel free! I’m sure that it will take my breath away and give me more insight into my fandoms.

Fourth, I prefer slash, though it isn’t necessary for the fic: you can go for the male bonding or buddy fic or bromance. I would request, however, that you do not write these characters in het relationships. I also begin to retch at fluff happening between my ‘manly’ characters!

Countdown to Yuletide!
Wow.... my life has been so hectic, I haven't posted here since last Yuletide--epic fail.....    :^{

Well, I can't guarantee that this year will be better, but I'm excited that I did get my sign-up done!  I wasn't too awfully excited when I started, but I was by the time I was done.  I'd reviewed a couple of excerpts for the fandoms I requested/offered, and I was reminded how vibrant, exciting, and totally hotttttttt they all are.

I am totally into human interaction:  physicality, romance, sex, intense dialogue, explosive reactions, etc., in my fandoms.  The ones I've chosen encapsulate those areas brilliantly.

  1. How to Get Away with Murder stars a brilliant African American actress, Viola Davis.  The show is witty, cynical, sexy, and at a (n extremely) few moments, heartrending.  We think it is going to be about a kick ass, take-no-names criminal defense lawyer, and it is, but it is also about a black woman trying to make it in the US law system, about the foibles and flaws of academia, about relationships, and commitment and passion and intensity.  I requested/offered the gay law student, Connor Walsh, who is a bright, neurotic, gorgeous man who uses his body as just one more tool in his arsenal.  I've only seen 5 episodes of this new show, and I'm already taken with his complexity.  I am also taken with his sex scenes which have been incredibly erotic for all that they do not show.

  2. The Administration Series by Manna Francis has a bisexual male couple in a BDSM relationship.  The protagonist, Val Toreth is a bright, sociopathic, gorgeous man who uses his body as just one more tool....  I'm already seeing a pattern here.  I was introduced to this series by hpstrangelove one evening.  I ended up reading through the night, and showing up at her doorstep the next day for the rest of the series.  This was about 4 years ago, and I've been totally, irrevocably, insanely in love with the characters ever since.  I've actually been gifted a story by hpstrangelove one Yuletide in this fandom!

  3. Another show that I've become enamored of this year has been Dominion.  Angels are the new, hot supernatural beings this year in urban fantasy, and after a few scenes of this show, I can see why.  I mean, what's not to love: a handsome, muscular, almost invincible winged creature in leather with a sword?  Oh, and he has a brother?  OMG, sign me up!  Even the scenes with the women (both het and femmeslash) are super erotic.

  4. And finally, another series that hpstrangelove hooked me up with:  Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale.  Again, super hot men having hawt man secks.....  Oh, yummmmmm.....

Anyway, I am excited to see what I'll be assigned (and I'm always excited to read my gift)!

And maybe, in the meantime, I may actually post something here this year......
